Lost Sea Adventure offers unforgettable experience

Lost Sea Adventure – A memory that will last forever.

The Lost Sea Adventure is one of Tennessee’s most unique and popular attractions — an experience you’ll remember forever.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Lost Sea is America’s largest underground lake and is part of an extensive and historic cave system called Craighead Caverns.

Located in Sweetwater, Tennessee, the Lost Sea Adventure begins with a guided tour of the caverns, including a 3/4 mile round-trip walk on wide sloping pathways. Geological development of immense cavern rooms and rare formations are explained. At the bottom of the cave, guests take a boat ride on the Lost Sea.

About The Lost Sea Adventure Tours

The Lost Sea Adventure tour takes approximately one hour and 15 minutes.

Also available is the Wild Cave Tour, made for organizations like the Boys or Girl Scouts, schools, camps, churches, etc. Participants are given the opportunity to spend the night in the cave or simply tour the underdeveloped cave rooms as well as experiencing the regular cavern tour. Guests will get to see many unique formations, such as anthodites — cave flowers that are so rare that the Lost Sea contains half of the world’s known formations.

History of the Lost Sea

The Lost Sea caverns have been known and used since the days of the Cherokee Indians. A wide range of Indian artifacts have been found, including pottery, arrowheads, weapons, and jewelry.

One of the Lost Sea cave’s earliest visitors — from 20,000 years ago — was a Pleistocene jaguar, whose tracks have been found deep in the cave.

When the first white settlers arrived in the Tennessee Valley in the 1820s, they discovered the Lost Sea cave and used it for storing potatoes and other vegetables.

And during the Civil War, the Confederate Army mined the Lost Sea cave for saltpeter, a commodity necessary to the manufacture of gunpowder.

Wild Cave Tour visitors can explore the areas where the jaguars roamed, vegetables were stored, and saltpeter was made.

The Lost Sea is a member of Southern Highlands Attractions, the most highly acclaimed visited points of interest in the Southern Highland Region of the United States. It is also a member of the National Cave Association, which stresses the preservation of natural resources.

The Lost Sea Adventure is open year-round, except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
