CINCO DE MAYO – A DAY TO CELEBRATE IN THE SMOKIES!

Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for “fifth of May” and is a celebration day in the United States to commemorate the Mexican army’s victory over the invading army of France on May 5th, 1861. Napoleon III was seeking to establish a Latin-American stronghold following the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848.
It began in the Mexican-American communities in the American West and today is celebrated as a day of Mexican heritage and pride. For non-Mexicans it is an opportunity to eat Mexican food and drink Mexican beer and perhaps get a T-shirt from your favorite Mexican Restaurant.
If you live in or are visiting the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, one of the best places to celebrate Cinco De Mayo is Villa Zapata.
