Spring is just around the mountains….
Spring is the Perfect Time to visit the Smokies!
The warm winter has everyone in the Smokies thinking about spring, and it is comin’ ‘round the mountain, getting closer every day. With the spring-like weather the grass is greening up, buds are coming out on the trees, and many of the spring flowers are in full bloom. Yes, we will get some more cold weather, and even a snow storm or two but as the days get longer we march inevitably toward the warmer weather of spring.
Spring is a lovely time to come to the Smokies. Of course we have St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th and many of our eateries and pubs celebrate with special food and drink. Of course, many of the locals dress in green and various holiday-themed accessories to celebrate the day. The official first day of spring then follows on the 20th and the surrounding valleys and mountains begin to explode with colors of green, reds and the many colors of wildflowers.
Spring Activities & Events in the Smokies
The 23rd Annual A Mountain Quiltfest, hosted by the City of Pigeon Forge, happens March 21-25 when quilters from around the world come together to learn, share, create and display their unique creations. This event is open to the public and is worth taking the time to see this old-time mountain skill first-hand. Many of the quilts are available for purchase as are quilting products and materials.
Pigeon Forge is decorated with thousands of beautiful flowers and plants and they host the Mountain Quiltfest and the spring Pigeon Forge Rod Run. The Old Mill hosts Stringtime in the Smokies which features Appalachian crafters, musicians from the Smoky Mountains, antique farm equipment and old-fashioned games. Fun and food for all. Dollywood puts on the Festival of Nations and Dolly is the Grand Marshall for her parade down the Parkway.
From April 11-15, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park host the 2017 Annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage. There are professionally guide programs that explore the area’s rich heritage of wildflowers, ecology, wildlife, culture and natural history through walks, motorcades, art classes, seminars and photo tours. Registration begins through the National Park on March 1 at The Wildflower Pilgrimage .
